Discover The Exrordinary Benefits of Coconut Oil – From Hair and Skin Beauty Treatments to Improved Overall Health

Coconut Flour

Most people don’t usually consider coconut flour when cooking, but when you discover how healthy and versatile it is, you might see it in a different light.

What is Coconut Flour?

Coconut flour is basically the meat of the coconut that is scooped out, dried, de-fatted and finely ground into a powder very similar to wheat flour.

However, the similar appearance is about the only thing it has in common, because unlike wheat flour, coconut flour consists of approx 15% coconut oil and 60% dietary fiber! The remaining 25% consists of water, protein, carbohydrates and other important nutrients.

It is also gluten-free which is an important consideration to so many people who have a gluten intolerance or wheat allergy.

Lose Weight by Cooking with Coconut Flour

The high fiber and protein content, combined with low carbohydrates make it ideal for anyone regulating their weight. It also helps to balance the body’s blood sugar levels which helps protect against diabetes.

The fiber helps keep the digestive system functioning correctly and the coconut oil has ‘essential fatty acids’ that can lower LDL cholesterol levels.

Pastries, cookies, muffins, cakes etc. can now be enjoyed without the concern of putting weight on, or increasing your cholesterol levels. Loaded with healthy dietary fiber, foods made with coconut flour are a good source of protein with fantastic flavor and texture.

Where Can I Buy Coconut Flour?

Coconut flour can be bought from specialist grocers or health food stores. Although because it has such a good shelf life, I find it easier and cheaper to buy it online.

You’ll find many different varieties and brands of coconut flour, but try to opt for the type that is either organically produced or virgin coconut flour, which isn’t highly processed. The color should not be pure white, but more of a creamy color.

Read the label or the product description before you buy, and if you’re in any doubt contact the manufacturers and ask them. Also make sure it’s unsweetened. Most brands these days are unsweetened, but it’s worth making sure before you buy it.

I have been using Bob’s Red Mill Organic Coconut Flour and absolutely love its subtle coconut flavor in my foods. It works really well in smoothies too!

You can make your own coconut flour at home with a food processor, but without a grain mill you’ll probably struggle in getting a “floury” consistency.

Conclusion

Coconut flour is easy to incorporate into a healthy lifestyle and used in your diet, especially if you want to lose some weight. By substituting coconut flour in some of your favorite recipes, you can literally have your cake and eat it – guilt free!

I hope by now you can see the many benefits of coconut flour and the reasons for substituting it for regular baking flour. Enjoy!

I’ve been using coconut oil for about a year now. It’s quite a healthy oil to use, and I like to use it almost exclusively. I make sweet potato fries with it. . . yummy! And I add it to bread, pancakes, cookies, and just about anything I bake. I will usually use half coconut oil, and half other fat for baking.

I’ve been making the switch from gluten flours to gluten-free flours, so coconut flour is on my list to try.
